How an email QR code works

An email QR code uses the standardized mailto: URL protocol. When scanned by a mobile device camera, it opens the user’s preferred default email application with your pre-configured recipient email address already populated in the "To" field.

Static email QR codes do not require server calls or redirect platforms. The mailto instructions are encoded directly into the square pattern, ensuring that the link works immediately and permanently without third-party dependencies.

Draft pre-formatted subject lines and body text

With our upgraded email generator, you can go beyond a simple recipient address. You can pre-populate a custom email subject line and a message body template.

This is incredibly effective for customer service portals ("Scan to request support"), marketing promotions, event RSVPs ("Scan to register for the workshop"), or feedback collection on table tents ("Scan to submit dining feedback"). It eliminates typing friction for the user.

Reliable and tracking-friendly static codes

Because static email QR codes bypass redirection databases, they never expire and are completely secure. If you want to track which physical materials or tables generated a scan, you can pre-fill unique tracking codes in the email subject or body.

For example, set the subject for a menu flyer QR to "Menu Feedback - Main Street Cafe" and a window sign QR to "Menu Feedback - Front Window". This lets you analyze campaign attribution directly in your inbox.

FAQ

Which email clients will open when users scan the code?

Scanning the QR code automatically opens the native email application set as the default on the user’s smartphone (such as Apple Mail, Gmail, Outlook, or Samsung Mail).

Can the email be sent automatically upon scanning?

No. For security and privacy reasons, mobile operating systems will never send an email automatically. The scan launches the pre-formatted draft in their email client, but the user must review it and tap the "Send" button themselves.

Can I track scan analytics for static email QR codes?

Because static QR codes use direct mailto links with no tracking redirects, we do not log analytics. However, you can easily track scans by pre-filling unique subject lines or identifier codes in the body template to identify the scan source.
